4. Obtaining links to your website
The Theory
The best way to improve your search engine ranking is for lots of people to visit your website and like it so much that the advertise your website on their website ( ie they create a back link for you. ) reciprocal links are also good, but you need as many one way links to your website as possible.
That's all well and good if we have the luxury of time, so how can we speed up the process?
Paid Directory Listings
This is the best place to start. These websites are crawled by the search engines on a regular basis, therefore by paying for a link on their website you can get very good results. I prefer to use directories that charge a one off fee rather than a yearly subscription Click here for a list of the directories I use and the cost of each.
Reciprocal Links
Once you have started to get your website noticed you can start asking for reciprocal links. The best way to do reciprocal links is known as a three way link request. To do this you need to have at least 2 websites. You ask a Webmaster to link to your website A and in return you will link to them from your website B. If you only have 1 website they will link to you from their website A and you will in turn link to their website B.
Mix it up
The object is to make it appear that the links to your website happened naturally. make the anchor text as varied as possible, not all links should be to the home page. I would say about 25% of links to your website should be to internal pages.
